Biggar RFC was shocked and saddened to learn of the untimely death of dedicated club member Ian Conn following a car accident on Friday.
His wife, Elma, who was also in the car was taken to hospital but allowed home after treatment..
The club’s thoughts and condolences are with Elma, Ian’s Dad Bill, sister Shona, brother Donald and their families.
As a founder member of the club Ian, better known to many as Alfie, played in the clubs first fixture in 1975. He was much more than just a member of that 1975 team however, as he served the club with distinction taking on various roles over the past 50 years.
He served as Fixture Secretary (1978), as Club Secretary (1982-1993), Vice President (2001/02), President (2002-04, when Biggar gained promotion to the Premiership), Secretary (2004-08) and was currently Lead Trustee of the Biggar RFC Charity.
Following his retirement from playing Ian also served as a referee, taking charge of many local matches and those further afield.
A fortnight ago at the clubs 50th Anniversary Ball, Ian was pictured proudly as one of the 11 surviving members of the 1975 team and also as one of the past Presidents in attendance at the celebration.
Always forthright with his views and opinions Ian was a committed club member and as a retired banker, one who had an excellent working knowledge of finance and legal procedures.
He always had the good of the club at heart and there is little doubt that aside from many of us losing a great friend he will be sorely missed at Hartree Mill.
